Screen printing is the most "traditional" apparel branding method. It involves the creation of a screen for each colour in the logo and then transferring the design one colour at a time using ink and a press. Each colour is applied as individual layers and special inks are used so that the colours don’t run or blend. The process is finished once all the colours have been pressed and placed in an oven to set the logo on the garment.
Screen-printing is the preferred method for large orders as they are more cost-effective. The minimum order is 25 units; however, the costs decrease with larger orders. Price is determined by the garment style chosen, the quantity and the number/size of logos.
Have lots of colours or fine details in your logo? You may be better off with another form of printing, direct-to-film printing! Direct to film is the little sister of screen-printing and seen within the industry as the “new and improved” garment printing process. Direct to film involves a special type of print that initially goes onto transfer paper which is then “pressed” against the garment in a machine similar to a sandwich press, using heat to bind the print to the garment.
These are quicker to set up and use than screen printing, as they only have one setup per logo. However, any variations in the logo need to be treated as brand new logos. This method is generally used for smaller run orders or orders with lots of colours due to the setup costs associated with screen-printing. Direct to film can also achieve gradients and more intricacies than traditional screen-printing.
