Introduction
Time to update the sports uniforms for your school? Need some new gear for interschool sports? Starting some new interschool sports and need specific uniforms for them? You're probably looking for tips for designing your school sports uniform.
You've come to the right place! When it comes to uniform design, we've got plenty of experience and professional advice from years of experience. Keep in mind, uniform design is more than just colours and styles. It's also about your students and how they look and feel when they wear sports uniforms.
At a minimum, we recommend schools update their sports uniforms at least every five years. This ensures they are fresh for students to wear and keep up with the current uniform trends.
If it's time for you to update your sports uniforms, read on below to get all the top tips for designing your uniforms.
What To Consider When Designing Your School Sports Uniforms
1. Ensure the colours you choose are accurate to school branding.
It is important for school sports uniforms to reflect the school's brand accurately. Students represent the school in these uniforms, so promoting the school well is essential. That's why you must ensure the colours match your school's colours.
Providing the School's Pantone colours is the best way to ensure accuracy. The Pantone Colour System, or PMS, is a standardized colour-matching system widely used worldwide.
The system helps the designer create consistency in colours across decoration methods. Your school's Pantone colours are likely stored in a database. Ask your branding coordinator or uniform manager if you need help finding them.
2. Make sure colours aren't going to show sweat.
We all know school-aged kids and teenagers can be extremely self-conscious. And nothing makes a teenager more self-conscious than prominent sweat marks. Keep this in mind when choosing your sports uniform colours. Opt for a colour that doesn't show sweat marks.
3. Choose a dark colour for school-provided bottoms.
As with the consideration for colours and sweat, it is also important that any school-provided bottoms are a dark colour. Nobody likes wearing dirt-stained pants!
The right colour choice in bottoms can also help to ensure consistent sports participation and avoid discomfort for menstruating players.
4. Have an inclusive sizing range available for students.
Sport is for everyone! There's nothing worse than playing in a uniform that is much too big or much too small.
Ensure you provide a wide range of sizes so everyone can play their sport comfortably.
We also suggest getting women's sizes instead of just unisex. It helps girls feel welcome in sports by having well-fitting uniforms for them.
Here at Cheeta Teamwear, we have junior, men's and women's sizes available on all custom clothing items, and we also provide a wide range of sizes.
5. Using team numbers in your jersey design? Consider randomising them.
Do you have numbers on the back of your team's footy jerseys or basketball singlets? We recommend randomising the number allocation.
For example, if you assign non-randomised numbers on your sports jerseys, numbers 1-10 will be medium sizes, numbers 11-20 will be large sizes and numbers 21-30 will be extra-large sizes.
Instead, if you randomise numbers for each size, the result will be: Mediums are numbers 1, 7, 12, 23, 30, and 15; larges are 4, 5, 11, 19, 21, 27 etc.
You never know which students have body image issues, so randomising the numbers helps. It means that not everyone knows what size they are wearing.
Think outside the box for your sports uniform design!
Far too many schools have boring, plain school uniforms for their inter-school sports or PE uniforms.
Take the opportunity to get creative, use school logos in a new way, change up the designs, and try something that keeps up with modern trends.
Cheeta Teamwear can help you create custom designs that look great and stand out from the rest – all while following your school branding guidelines!
